My most bizarre flight stories

Do you know that feeling? These moments, when you feel like you’re in the wrong picture?

Today I´m going to talk about a few of those experiences – ones, which occured while I was sitting in a plane or waiting in the airport.

Maybe you also have a story you want to share? Happy to find them in the comment section below!

Here we go:

1. Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to the Beauty Salon

Let’s start with a low-key story. Unfortunately, I can´t remember which airline I was flying with and where I was going, but: I do remember, that the lady in the row behind me, has mistaken the plane for a nail studio. Thank God, there occured no turbulences! Imagine, how would have worked it out for the woman to apply the polish to her nails then? The stewardess probably also thought it was amusing, but I guess she needed to meet her obligation and had to stop the fun. Well, probably three fingernails were still missing out.

2. No, sir, I don´t have any drugs with me

So, I was sitting at the airport in Quito, Ecuador. My flight was delayed and therefore I was going to miss my connection in Madrid. My mood wasn´t too bad, but still not great. As I was waiting at the gate I suddenly heard an announcement from the ground staff, mentioning my name. As my knowledge of Spanish wasn´t huge, I immediatly was off to ask someone what is happening (in English obviously). I got to know, that my luggage was one of five chosen to undergo inspection. Yeah ok, that wasn´t my first and last time that this was happening, but it certainly never happend that I had to witness the process. I had to follow a security guy outside – actually to the airfield – where all the baggage was examined by sniffer dogs. So there was kind of a nice background sound due to the dogs, while I was standing in front of my suitcase, two security men on the opposite side, where searching their way through my stuff – always fun to have strangers going through your clothes (e. g. underwear). Of course there wasn´t a lot (none) illegal stuff to be found, and I was pretty happy, that I finally could go back to the gate again (through several security doors.) Did that ever happen to you? Tell me!

3. Hawaii, No. #1 – You don´t get out of here!

Back in 2011, I´ve been the first time to Hawaii. It was the day of our departure and we´d already been sitting in the plane. After a while the captain announced that there was a technical problem and it takes some more time until we can leave. Ok, no problem. About half an hour later, he came back to us and said, that they need to fly in a spare part from another island, but it won´t take much time and we can stay on the airplane. To cut a long story short: After 4 (!) hours on the plane without flying, it was already midnight, we´ve been told that there won´t be a departure today! Hell yeah! Since we had to wait that long to get a hotel and a shuttle, we´ve made it to bed at 5 five a.m.! The next few hours weren´t made for sleeping – we had to find a solution as we urgently had to go home to go back to work! It wasn´t even possible to get a flight the same day, so we had to wait another day. Of course back at home, everyone was saying: uuuhh, two more nights in Hawaii, could be worse! But we sadly we couldn´t really make the best out o fit! However, the fact, that we´d been waiting on that airplane for full 4 hours still makes me laugh!

4. Hawaii, No. #2 – convict style meets weapons enthusiast

Another story from Hawaii! Second time on the islands! First funny moment happend while we´ve been lining up at the check-in. A few metres away two police men were walking by and in between a convict. In typical style of course, with handcuffs on hand and feet. Let me tell you, we´ve prayed that he won´t be on the same flight – we´ve been lucky ;).

A different airport, but also at the check-in! A men went to the desk next to us, opened his suitcase and what did we see? A huge (okay, at least it seemed huge to us) gun! We´ve prayed again 😉

5. Two strangers, being on the same wavelength

My last bizarre story, took place on the flight from Vancouver to Munich – and is a really lovely one. To give you a bit of a background, I have to say, that I´m actually a bit shy, I don´t speak to strangers very easily. On my left hand side an old guy, I think he was French, who was coughing nonstop (yeah!!). On my right hand side a young guy, I know he was German ;)! The next nine hours I experienced something I´ve never had before (within such a long time frame): Without a pause I was talking, debating and most important laughing so much with the guy next to me. I guess, I don´t have to mention, that I´m talking about the one on the right ;). It was such a cool thing, talking to a complete stranger for about nine hours and getting along that much! Certainly one of my most awesome memories in terms of flying!

I´d really love to hear some of your stories now! Any good stuff to share? 🙂

Deine Geschichte ruft echt Gänsehaut hervor, Renate!

    Renate
