since I´ve been in Switzerland last week, mainly in the eastern part, I wanted to take the opportunity to make a short trip to Liechtenstein.
Did you know that the Principality of Liechtenstein is the richest monarchy in Europe? I didn´t want to miss out on that of course. Who knows, maybe I would meet the prince by coincidence ;).
What does Liechtenstein offer?
In summary, is the small country with around 37,000 inhabitants worth a visit?
Honest (and subjective) answer:
For only exploring the capital Vaduz, not really!
I can´t say that my expectations were too high because I had none. In the center of Vaduz you´ll find a few government buildings, the art and the Postal Museum, the Tourist Information Centre and some shops. In terms of architecture, these do not shine that bright, but this is of course, my very own position. I´ll share some pictures with you, that you can get an impression.
However, a nice photo opportunity is the view of and from the Castle of Vaduz, which sits high above the city and is the Princes´ home. Who wants to have a closer, can walk up within about 20 minutes or drive by car.
During our visit, a competition in beach volleyball just took place in Vaduz and the music and atmosphere really brought good vibes. What´s going on there, when there´s no such event I can´t imagine.
Nevertheless, they try to offer small highlights for the tourists. Besides the numerous souvenir shops, there is also a photo wall, where visitors can get an idea, how their head looks on a body, which wears either dirndl or lederhosen (traditional clothes). In addition you can get an official stamp for your passport in the tourist office, as well as in the shop next door (costs about 3 CHF).
Vaduz also advertises its historic houses, a bit outside the city center in Mittel- and Oberdorf.
Finally, I´d like to mention that there are also hiking and biking trails in Liechtenstein. And the Principality also offers some opportunities for skiing, in winter obviously. Logically I can´t tell you anything about the quality of those.
A city trip to Liechtenstein?
In my opinion, Liechtenstein isn´t suitable for a city trip – but in combination with a visit to eastern Switzerland (or Austria) it is a better idea. To explore the capital it will only take you about an hour. If you´re near, you may make a stopover, but you won´t miss out a lot if you don´t.
Who of you have been to Vaduz or in Liechtenstein in general? What is your opinion?
